Composting, FSC, Monty Don, wooden compost bin

single-wooden-composter-01Monday morning was really, really busy here in the office as we one of our favourite and best selling products was given a special feature by Monty Don in the weekend supplement of The Mail.

Those of you who have already purchased one of our FSC Wooden Compost Bins will know how fabulous they are but to see this appear in the press was wonderful. The mention we received was “Spacious with solid wood sides that retain most of the heat during the composting process. Easy to assemble and, all in all, a top class bin.” What more could we ask for?

So to celebrate this appearing, the team here at The Recycle Works decided that for a LIMITED PERIOD ONLY, we would offer 10% discount on our FSC wooden range of products – therefore, all our compost bins and raised beds are for sale with this 10% discount. Also, don’t forget that all orders over £15 come with FREE Mainland UK Delivery.

Today really is a BIG day and in more than one sense of the word!

While the world’s media is focusing today on the inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the United States, we here at the Recycle Works are really excited about the launch of our NEW website

www.gardeningwithchildren.co.uk.

Gardening With Children

Gardening With Children

Our fantastic new website has been designed by the brilliant team at Chamber Internet and our big thanks go out to Jon (for his brilliant design),  Shaf and Debbi (who did all the twiddly bits) for all their hard work over the last few month – they have had to cope with us make continual changes to the content without loosing their cool – but finally, today, the site went live!

Gardeningwithchildren is the brainchild of Sylvia and is an extension of her ‘Love Your Environment’ campaign.  It’s aim is simple – to encourage children to get into the garden – and in particular, to learn how to grow and enjoy their own healthy food.

The site has been designed so that it can used by both families and schools as a source of information and as an educational resource. It is packed with information, fact sheets, competitions, quizzes and games that all can enjoy – be it mum, dad, grandparents or teachers – but most importantly, children.

Please take a look at the site – and let us have your comments. We’d love to know what you think of the site.

Recycling and the Recession

Composting, love your environment, recycling, reduce packaging

recyclenow-logoThere are lots of articles in the press and online at the moment about how the economic downturn has affected the amount of recycling that is being proactively done within the UK. Many commercial companies involved in the recycling industry are having to store their collected items in aircraft hangers and warehouses as the price they can achieve for these items has dropped drastically.

However, this really got me thinking about how I personally recycle and the conclusion that I’ve reached is that I need to do less recycling! Yes that’s right but don’t shout at me yet…. let me explain!

I recycle all my card and paper, lots and lots of it! Surely if I reduced the amount I purchase in the first place or create though, there’d be less that needed to be recycled! Packaging – when I purchase anything from a shop I’m going to buy it loose if its a food item and NOT put it in a bag to then be weighed. I’m waiting for my first home grown produce to be available hence why I’m still shopping for ingredients. I’ve also swapped my canned drinks for water and not bottled I hasten to add!  So not only am I hopefully creating less waste, I should be healthier as well!

There must be so many more things we can all do and surely together we can come up with lots of tips and ideas to help make a difference. So if you ‘Love Your Environment’ email us and let us know what you suggest and we can share all your ideas on the Blog!

Forest of BowlandHere at The Recycle Works, we are extremely fortunate in that we are located on the door step of the Forest of Bowland ANOB – a real jewel, which as it is off the beaten track, is rarely visited by people from without the region! With its centre located at the centre of the United Kingdom, it is the place that the Queen has admitted she would like to retire to, should that ever happen. In fact, as the Duchy of Lancaster (and therefore the Crown) owns a considerable area of land in Bowland, she is a regular visitor to the area.

The Forest of Bowland is very active in developing sustainable tourism under the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas, and as part of a recent ‘Green Ideas Day’ organised by Lancashire County Council, our very own Simon was asked to do a presentation to a group of local businesses, including B+B’s and holiday lets etc on the benefits of using Bokashi composting for the disposal of food waste.

As many of the farmers in this very rural and somewhat isolated area have restricted access to the normal services available in urban areas, the disposal of food waste can be expensive.

As many of the farmers in this very rural and somewhat isolated area have restricted access to the normal services available in urban areas, the disposal of food waste can be expensive. Bokashi composting is an ideal solution for dealing with food waste in these circumstances, especially as because many of the B+B’s etc will have gardens where the can use their bokashi and hopefully produce wonderful vegetables etc to feed to their guests. This would be real recycling in operation!
