After the over-indulgence that often happens over Christmas, its good to move into the new year with thoughts of recycling and cutting down on our waste production.

With the Bokashi Bucket, every time you have scraps to throw, be it meat, fish or vegetable, just open the lid and drop them in the Bokashi Bucket along with a ‘sprinkling’ of the Bokashi Bran and re-seal the lid.  …And by using the Effective Micro-organisms in the bran there will be no smells to worry about!

When the bucket is full, leave for two weeks with the lid sealed and then either dig the resultant Bokashi into the garden or add to your compost heap. As the Bokashi is ‘composting’ in the Bokashi bucket, a nutrient rich liquor is produced and this can be collected every couple of days using the tap on the bucket.  Dilute the liquor with water at 1:100 and use as plant feed throughout the home and garden.

We recommend the purchase of two Bokashi buckets, so that when one is full and ‘composting’, you have a spare to start filling – there is a considerable saving if you purchase two buckets at the same time

christmas gifts, hogitats, recycle works, steel seed tins, wildlife cameras

Christmas is approaching fast and this year it seems that there are going to be lots of lucky people receiving a whole range of different presents from Santa.

We thought you may like a little inspiration for what to buy that special person in your life so here are just a selection of gifts that are currently flying out the door!

Hogitat - Hedgehog House

These gorgeous ‘Hogitats’ provide a safe retreat and shelter for Hedgehogs. Why not help a Hedgehog get on the property ladder this year?!

Wildlife Camera

The versatile Wildlife Surveillance Camera system features a superb colour/ infrared, weatherproof camera unit in an FSC timber housing for additional protection and security. Complete with audio and integral infrared lights (invisible to the eye and animals) the camera automatically swaps from colour during daylight, to infrared (black and white) in low light conditions.

Steel Seed Tins

These stylish boxes are the perfect place to keep seeds and bulbs in good condition and away from mice and insects. Designed in consultation with Tony Russell, BBC garden writer and broadcaster, each Seed Tin is made of heavy gauge steel. There is a lip on the shelf and the floor of the box so nothing will roll out. The boxes are 30 x 30 x 15cm and can be free standing or wall mounted.

So if you’re looking for inspiration for Christmas stocking fillers, why not have a look at the website at www.recycleworks.co.uk  – we hope you’ll find the perfect gift!

If you have been growing a crop of  cauliflower this year, you’ll hopefully be enjoying the harvest round about now.  vegetables taste so much better when they are eaten in season, and nothing beats harvesting your own tea!  The taste and sense of satisfaction is beyond compare.

If you want to grow your own vegetables visit www.recycleworks.co.uk for all your gardening needs.

This is a great heart warming family recipe, and is one easy way I manage to get my kids eating one of their 5  a day.

Recipe

1 large, creamy-white cauliflower, trimmed and broken into florets
25g butter
25g plain flour
550 ml milk
150g cheddar Cheddar, grated
2 tbsp crème fraîche or double cream
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
25g fine fresh white breadcrumbs
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

  1. Cook the cauliflower in boiling water until it is tender but not over-cooked
  2. Grease an oven proof dish and then add the cauliflower
  3. Make the cheese sauce by melting the butter in a sauce-pan.  Add the flour and stir with a wooden spoon to make a paste, but do not allow to go brown or burn
  4. Add the milk a little at a time and keep stirring the mixture
  5. When all the milk is added simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens and is creamy.  Stir regularly to avoid the sauce sticking to the bottom of the pan
  6. Remove from the heat and add the cheese, crème friache and mustard
  7. Pour the sauce over the cauliflower
  8. Mix the breadcrumbs and a handful of cheddar then sprinkle over the top
  9. Bake at 200 C for around half an hour or until browned
  10. Serve with crusty bread and enjoy!

Raised beds are the perfect way to grow vegetables, and The Recycleworks Ltd  specialises in the manufacture of a large selection.  The soil in raised beds is easier to maintain and is generally lighter, better drained and warmer.  Gardening in a raised bed can also reduce pest damage and all in all crops often do better.  It’s also easier  for the gardener with no more heavy digging.  The Raised Beds from www.recycleworks.co.uk are made from FSC wood and with no screws, no nails and no holes to dig, they can be assembled in minutes.

Leaf Mould ComposterIt’s the time of year when there are leaves galore everywhere, especially if haven’t been collecting them up and putting them in your Leaf Mould Compost Bin, so there is a little job you need to do………

Remember to check you gutters regularly for any leaves or debris that have collected in them, which can then easily make their way down in to your water butts.

Also, now is an ideal time to empty your Water Butt which is something that should be done on an annual basis anyway, as with all the rain water we’re getting they’ll soon get filled up again!!

After all, you wouldn’t want Santa slipping on wet leaves either…..would you!!
