Herb Pot

Now that more light is coming through our kitchen windows each day a neat purchase is our new 22cm Herb Pot with 4 removable pots and 4 types of herb seed. This handy pot boasts a great little reservoir so busy people will not need to worry if watering is forgotten for a few days during the week.

This is also a great pot to encourage your children to grow and eat herbs as they can grow their own and then use them to cook some lovely meals.

Another must have for seed sowing is the Paper Potter. Making the Paper Pots is so rewarding and fun that a few people together can make dozens and dozens over a cuppa! It’s more friendly that way.

We always love to find recipes that are full of seasonal ingredients and this one is perfect. So if you are still enjoying your harvest of carrots, parsnips and garlic give this carrot and root vegetable gratin a go.

Fruit and vegetables taste best when they are at their freshest – straight from the plot to the plate.   …And for all of your gardening needs visit our website.

Ingredients

500g waxy potatoes sliced very thinly
1 parsnip , sliced thinly
3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1 sprig chopped fresh rosemary
284ml carton double cream
150ml full-fat milk
350g carrots , sliced wafer thin
50g parmesan cheese, grated

Method

  • Preheat the oven to around 170 C Grease a shallow ovenproof dish.
  • Layer the slices of potatoes and parsnip in the bottom of the dish with two of the sliced garlic cloves and sprinkle over a little salt and half the rosemary.
  • Pour the cream and milk into a large saucepan, add the rest of the rosemary and garlic, the carrots and a little seasoning. Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for a few minutes.
  • Pour the carrots and cream over the other vegetables, and spread the carrots out.
  • Sprinkle over the parmesan, cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake a further 20 minutes until golden brown.

This is totally delicious alongside a meat dish or as a vegetarian meal eaten on its own.

From time to time, we like to tell you about schemes and good causes that might be of interest and benefit to anyone gardening with children.   This week its the turn of the Royal Horticultural Society and their Campaign for School Gardening. This initiative aims to encourage and support schools to develop and actively use a school garden, which we think is a fabulous idea!

As part of the campaign, RHS provides teachers with resources, including lesson plans, gardening advice, seasonal activities and lots more.  All this is available through their website, along with an extensive programme of training days.  You can also organise a free school visit to one of the four RHS gardens?

Once you’ve registered with the scheme you will receive a free start-up kit, regular news and items of interest, rewards and certificates as you progress, free seeds, and access to expert advice.
