Gardening Teaches New Skills & Makes Children Happy!

The BBC news website has published a superb article on their site which shows how important gardening can be in a child’s upbringing. The article reads……

Taking part in gardening can make a child feel happy and boost their development, research suggests. The study of 1,300 teachers and 10 schools was commissioned by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).It found children in schools that encouraged gardening became more resilient, confident and lived healthier lives.

The RHS says school gardening should be used as a key teaching tool, rather than as an extra-curricular activity.

Researchers at the National Foundation for Educational Research carried out the study and found teachers who used gardening as part of learning said it helped improve children’s readiness to learn. They also said it encouraged pupils to become more active in solving problems, as well as boosting literacy and numeracy skills.

The report said: “Fundamental to the success of school gardens in stimulating a love of learning was their ability to translate sometimes dry academic subjects into practical, real world experiences.” Schools which integrate gardens into the curriculum are developing children who are much more responsive to the challenges of adult life

Dr Simon Thornton Wood Royal Horticultural Society

“Children were encouraged to get their hands dirty, in every sense. Teachers involved in the research said the result was a more active, inquisitive approach to learning.

“The changeable nature of gardening projects – where anything from the weather to plant disease can affect the outcome – forced children to become more flexible and better able to think on their feet and solve problems.”

Researchers also said that exposing small children to insects helped them to overcome their fears, while waiting for crops to grow taught children patience.

And gardening also helped teach about healthy living and healthy eating, with children more willing to try new vegetables if they had grown their own crops, they said.

Dr Simon Thornton Wood, director of science and learning at the RHS, said: “As the new coalition government considers a new approach to the primary curriculum, we hope they acknowledge the striking conclusions of our research and that gardens enable a creative, flexible approach to teaching that has significant benefits.

“Schools which integrate gardens into the curriculum are developing children who are much more responsive to the challenges of adult life.”

So let’s all get children involved in gardening and don’t forget about our other site, Gardening With Children, which has lots of fun ideas and activities for schools, families and grandparents to!!

Team Green Britain Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life. This year it’s between the 19th and 27th June 2010. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK.

As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK,  the aim is to make this year’s Team Green Britain Bike Week the biggest yet – encouraging half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

In 2010, Team Green Britain Bike Week aims to make ‘everyday cycling for everyone’ and inspire people to try out cycling – for fun, and as a means of getting around – to the local shops, to school, the library or just to visit friends.

Team Green Britain Bike Week is offering some great incentive rewards to organisers who encourage their participants to sign up to Team Green Britain.

Have you registered your event yet? If not, simply visit here.

Flies and Wasps – Bring On The Waspinator!

The Waspinator - A Prefect Solution For Wasps

Flies can be a pest in hot months, but you can keep them at bay without resorting to pesticide fly sprays. Look for non-toxic fly-paper strips that attract the insects with a sweet coating which they will become stuck to. Also, fit bead curtains to doorways to keep flies from entering the house and cover the lid of your compost heap with fly screen material to keep them from breeding inside. (Thank you FoE as always!)

Plus if you want to stop being bothered by wasps and get rid of wasps from areas of the home and garden, just hang up a Waspinator and foraging wasps will think there is already a wasps nest in residence. Then they will keep well away from what they think is a real wasps nest for fear of being attacked by the nest’s defenders. Back in stock and a great solution!

I am ashamed to tell you the Millie is back to her old habits of having a portion of snails for supper before she goes to bed. She cannot cope with them all, so our lovely all wool Slug Gone is the answer all around the outside of the vegetable beds to prevent the creatures from climbing over the side in the night. One of the big tubs will bring you a lot of satisfaction as you prepare your defences.

It is because of Millie and the early birds that we are very against killing slugs. Any poison in the bodies of the dead slug will be transferred to the next host and could be fatal for them too.

The Bank Holiday induced a lot of gardening and hundreds of you stocked up on the good value offers over the weekend. Vegetable plots are the focus of most gardens this year. In fact we will give a FREE 6 Pack Raised Bed for the best one each month to the owner of the best picture, providing we get more than 50 entries.
