Take Care Of Wild Birds This Winter

I reproduce this article from CJWildlife as it is so informed and interesting.

Robin & Wren Nest Box
Robin & Wren Nest Box

The (Winter) conditions were and are a major challenge for wildlife – as I write this it’s about 6°C but practically every pond, lake and mere in Shropshire is still covered in ice – and I’m amazed that birds the size of Wrens, Goldcrests and Long-tailed Tits were able to survive such severe and prolonged conditions. They have sophisticated adaptations such as heat exchangers to reduce heat loss through their feet; plumage that provides good thermal insulation and the ability to lay down enough fat during the day to stay warm by shivering through the night, but it’s still impressive in creatures weighing roughly the same as a sheet of A4 paper. I was very impressed by the images on the Devon Bird News blog of Wrens roosting in a House Martin nest.

As we’re barely a third of the way through the winter it’s worth stressing the importance of high energy foods like sunflower hearts and peanut cakes, providing shelter in the form of nest boxes, and maintaining a regular supply of both food and water. Unless we’re blessed with a sustained mild spell most of our wildlife will remain locked down in winter mode, but listen out for singing Wrens, Dunnocks, Blackbirds and Great Tits on sunny days, a sign of hope for the near future.

Many thanks to everyone who entered our Wooden Compost Bin competition, launched in November 2010.

We are delighted to announce that we sifted through hundreds of entries and the first correct one out of the hat was from the Foundation Gardening Team at the Bridge Academy, Fulham.

Congratulations to you all, your compost bin is on the way.  We hope you will get lots of good use out of it!

All of our wooden compost bins are handmade from FSC wood in our Ribble Valley workshop.  They are exceptional value – no wonder they are our best sellers!

If you are taking your Christmas tree down over the next day or so, why not shred it and recycle it in your own garden.

Take a look here for the range of Electric Shredders and Log Splitters available from Recycleworks.

…And if you don’t have a garden, contact your local authority for advice about the recycling schemes that they run.

It’s estimated that every person in the UK produces over 320kg of household waste each year, so every little step we take to recycle can make a big difference!
